What’s the difference between coaching & therapy with you?The main difference between coaching and therapy is that coaching will be focused on providing real-life support for client-defined behavioral change, rather than solely the development of self awareness or decreasing mental health symptoms associated with a specific mental health diagnosis. Clients can expect access to all of my knowledge regarding evidence-based research in the field developed over the last 20 years in the field, in addition to this behavioral support. Some areas of change commonly sought after in trauma-informed coaching with me include: Self-Regulation: Learning to regulate (calm down) the Body in order to create peace through stressful experiences in daily life, as well as think more clearly about navigating difficult situations more gracefully and strategically to meet one's personal goals. Emotional Awareness: Identifying a wide range of emotional experiences in self and others and how those emotions relate to personal needs. Communication & Self-Advocacy Skills: Learning to express personal wants and needs assertively, clearly and compassionately. Relationship Discernment: Developing skills to identify the many differences between healthy versus unhealthy relationships. Identification of Purpose: Defining the direction of one's life to include a systematic focus around personal values, goals and unique gifts to improve quality of life. Identification of Relationship Abuse: Learning to identify a wide range of manipulation and coercion tactics that underly abusive relationships – whether there is physical abuse present in the relationship or not. Creating Healthy Boundaries: Learning to define & communicate the clear lines that determine what is acceptable versus what is not acceptable in regards to meeting the standards that define your personal integrity. Please also keep in mind the stipulations regarding any legal/ethical implications for coaching versus therapy here.

Do you work with couples?I do work with couples, however in cases of suspected mental or emotional abuse it would be recommended that a couple works with a local practitioner in person. Issues of suspected abuse are very dynamic and between those moving parts and having multiple people involved in the work simultaneously, working with a therapist/counselor in person will be essential in those cases.
-
What should I expect in the first session? The first session is an opportunity for us to meet face-to-face. I will work with you to clarify your personal goals, as well as provide a comprehensive assessment, which will take into account your personal history (including any potential trauma), present-day concerns, and what you might be hoping for in this growth process. Together, we will address any concerns or questions you have regarding coaching and identify a plan to move forward that is centered around your personal goals and preferences. If, for any reason, you and I don't believe that working together is the best fit for you, I will provide you with specific referrals based on the comprehensive assessment provided.
-
How many coaching sessions will I need? This varies greatly from client to client depending on the unique needs of each individual. With this said, most of my clients see significant progress on goals and symptom reduction within the first 2-3 meetings.
-
How frequently will I need to meet? This is another area where my style of practice differs greatly from most other practitioners. I will not be overly directive about the frequency of our meetings because I want you to feel as comfortable and in control of the process as possible. Once we begin to work together, I will assess the frequency of our meetings and share adequate feedback if I get the impression that the current scheduling rhythm is a barrier to the goals set forth.

Is my relationship abusive?Physical violence is painful, but it is also obvious. There is frequently a mark leftover on the skin—whether as a scratch, bruise, or cut—to remind a victim of their abuse. Not all forms of domestic violence include physical abuse and in these cases, it is not as easy to identify or categorize as some other forms of domestic violence—such as those involving physical abuse or sexual assault. Psychological abuse is much less visible—also known as "covert“—which makes it harder to identify, even for a victim. The very nature of psychological abuse involves the use of "power and control tactics" that are designed to leave the victim ashamed, scared, and even confused about the source of the problem, as well as their own personal wants and needs. If you would like to review these “power and control tactics” with some support on how to assess the level of abuse in your relationship, read this article.
